Corey McCarty
Staff-level engineer with twelve years owning production systems a business can't run without. I stay close to the code while setting technical direction, and I grow the engineers around me instead of staying the only one who understands how something works.
Experience
Lead Developer - Summit Professional Education
Dec 2021 - Present
Senior-most engineer and technical owner for a platform serving 528K accounts and 3.5M+ enrollments (Staff Engineer / Engineering Lead scope).
- Stopped being the team's bottleneck and became its safety net, handing off clean problem definitions so three of five engineers run their own domains, the website, the Yeti platform, and the deployment pipelines, end to end, while I own every code review and pull request.
- Served as the sole technical partner to a non-technical CTO after a 2024 leadership change, translating system realities into decisions he could act on.
- Cut a customer-facing B2B account page from roughly ten minutes to under a minute with a relation-table redesign; the sales team had refused to demo it and now uses it live to close contracts.
- Grew a bootcamp-trained frontend developer into a full-stack contributor who now owns the deployment pipeline for the main website and its API, with direct releases to both test and production.
- Set direction for the migration off a legacy Universe/Pick data-entry system, pulled a floundering offshore team off the work, and coached the engineer who shipped the first module on a new Vue 3 frontend writing directly to Aurora.
- Coached an engineer through a nine-month Vue 2 to Vue 3 migration by asking the right questions and letting him make the architectural calls, including adopting ShadCN so the team owns its component library long-term.
- Recovered organic search from roughly 30th to a consistent top 10 after a disruptive top-down SSR rollout, clearing around 300 server errors and 600-plus Core Web Vitals issues.
- Rescued a board-mandated CMS migration left without a plan when its owner departed, shipping static HubSpot pages alongside the existing Nuxt application with no visible seam to users.
- Built a structured, on-demand skill system the dev team uses with their AI assistants, adding per-developer profiles, a PR-review workflow, and an app-wiring map of how the repositories connect, so cross-system knowledge lives in the repo instead of only in my head.
Software Engineer - Juice Plus
Jun 2020 - Dec 2021
- Took sole ownership of an undocumented, business-critical Java ETL and reverse-engineered it from the code to become the team's subject-matter expert.
- Prototyped a bridging API unifying five disparate databases behind a single business-entity interface using Hapi, TypeScript, and Prisma, learning the full stack from scratch to build it.
- Evaluated Go for the next-generation platform and recommended against adoption despite its technical fit, citing the org-wide rollover cost for an all-Java team.
- Worked alongside the company's most tenured engineers on next-generation architecture and OpenAPI design after an incoming director routed proof-of-concept work my way.
Software Engineer - Atos / Syntel (client: FedEx)
Sep 2014 - May 2020
- Owned and operated a Tier 1 XML document platform (~60TB) across two data centers, holding flight records and the auth data other systems depended on; carried 24/7/365 on-call alone for four years.
- Resolved most off-hours incidents by tracing faults to their real source, often proving the problem lived in a client system rather than ours.
- Built the runtime-configurable data layer behind an internal InfoSec risk-scoring system, a field model returning confidence scores on signals like IP, location, and domain.
Code Connector - Volunteer
Apr 2019 - Present
- Co-designed and run The Coding Dojo, a guided mob-programming meetup for newer developers; maintain the shared solutions repo and led a Hacktoberfest push. Several participants credit the Dojo with the confidence that landed their first developer jobs.
- Mentor developers at all levels on coding, career strategy, and advancement.
